The Gaming Brief:
- Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia will release the PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black on November 19 in Japan for 55,000 yen (tax included)
- Pre-orders open October 20 at PlayStation retailers and online stores in Japan
- The console is locked to Japanese system language and Japan-registered PSN accounts
- A Midnight Black disc drive launches the same day for 11,980 yen
PlayStation fans who wanted an all-black PS5 now have a release date, with a catch.
Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia will launch the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black on November 19 in Japan, with pre-orders opening October 20.
The announcement also restated Sony’s plan to end disc production for new games in January 2028. Sony hasn’t announced the console for other regions, so for most buyers this is a look at the hardware, not something they can purchase.
Japanese Language and PSN Account Locks Define the Midnight Black PS5
According to Gematsu, the console’s system language is locked to Japanese, and it can only be used with PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan.
The same restrictions apply to the previous Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition model Sony announced in November 2025.
Sony reportedly has announced no plans to release this version in other countries and that it’s unknown whether it will appear in Europe, as reports note.
The official product name even includes the label “Console Language: Japanese Only.”
55,000 Yen Console, 11,980 Yen Midnight Black Disc Drive
As Gamatsu notes, the Digital Edition ships without a disc drive. Players who still want physical games can buy a matching Midnight Black standalone drive on launch day for 11,980 yen, tax included. Together, the two cost 66,980 yen.
This translates to a price of roughly $350 as of October 13, and the drive at around $76, an accessible price point given the soaring hardware costs.
The console reportedly carries an 825GB SSD and a black casing styled after Sony’s Midnight Black accessories.
Reports also mention a warranty extension to two years (through March 31, 2027) upon registration, though buyers should verify this directly with Sony’s Japanese terms.
Sony’s January 2028 Disc Cutoff Gives the Drive Context
In the same announcement, Sony reiterated its plan to end physical disc production for new games in January 2028, a major shift for a gaming platform commanding roughly 45% of the global console market.
Per Gematsu, PlayStation games released from that month onward will be sold only digitally through PlayStation Store and other retailers. Disc versions of games released before January 2028 will remain playable.
That timeline explains why the standalone drive matters for anyone buying the Digital Edition in Japan. It’s the route to playing the disc library released before the cutoff, while new releases after it will only arrive as downloads.
