The Gaming Brief:
- BenchLife reports NVIDIA missed its own October deadline to send RTX 5080 24GB design kits to board partners
- The delay puts the rumored January 2027 launch in doubt, though VideoCardz notes NVIDIA could still reveal the card at CES
- A board partner previously told VideoCardz that a new card needs at least six weeks after design information arrives
- GameGPU goes further and reports the card is cancelled, and NVIDIA hasn’t confirmed either version
The RTX 5080 24GB may be stuck at the paperwork stage. NVIDIA was expected to give board partners design documentation for the 24GB card in October, but BenchLife reports that manufacturers still hadn’t received it by the end of the month.
This raises doubts about a January 2027 launch, while some reports say the card has been cancelled outright. NVIDIA, however, hasn’t commented on either, so the difference between a delay and a cancellation matters.
October Design Kits That Never Arrived
The missing materials are the design information partners need before building cards, as the reports note.
As of early November, manufacturers still lacked the PCB and cooling design files, GameGPU adds.
By swapping to larger 3GB memory chips while keeping the same main processor, the new design boosts total video memory to 24GB, a 50% increase over the original model.
It matches the 24GB VRAM target made popular by the RTX 4090, delivering the extra headroom heavy 4K gamers and local AI users want.
This is the second stall in the story. Earlier reports in mid-October said that partners had only been told verbally that materials were coming soon.
Six Weeks Minimum: What the Missing Kit Does to the Calendar
VideoCardz says a board partner once told it that launching a new graphics card takes at least six weeks after design information arrives, and that even two months may be optimistic.
It also notes NVIDIA could announce the card at CES and ship it weeks later, since an announcement doesn’t need retail-ready cards.
By our own arithmetic, a kit delivered December 1 would mean earliest availability around January 12 under the six-week minimum.
To land inside Q1, kits would need to arrive by roughly February 17. Each additional week of delay pushes the earliest retail date back by a week.
Delay or Cancellation: Two Readings of the Same BenchLife Report
GameGPU says NVIDIA has cancelled the 24GB RTX 5080 before production started, citing board partners who indicate the model isn’t coming.
It attributes the move to GB203 chips and scarce 3GB GDDR7 modules being diverted to RTX PRO cards and AI servers.
The base RTX 5080’s disappearance from NVIDIA’s store and its $2,000-plus retail prices reflect that diversion rather than shelf-clearing, the outlet said.
The BenchLife link GameGPU cites is titled as saying the card “might not launch at Q1,” which suggests uncertainty rather than a confirmed cancellation.
What we have now is that both the RTX 5080 and the RTX 5090 are already hard to find at reasonable prices, with supply to board partners reportedly restricted.
