The Gaming Brief:
- Nintendo Latin America VP Bill van Zyll told YouTuber Coelho there are “no plans to ditch physical” games
- He called Nintendo’s stance agnostic, guided by consumer preference, with Switch 2 just over a year old
- Sony announced on July 1 that disc production for all new PlayStation games ends in January 2028
- Switch 2 physical games ship as full cartridges or Game-Key Cards, which don’t store the full game
Physical game collectors just got a rare bit of reassurance.
Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, told Brazilian YouTuber Coelho that Nintendo isn’t planning to drop physical releases for Switch 2, just over a year after launch.
The comments arrive months after Sony said it will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games.
For anyone choosing between a shelf and an eShop library, Nintendo’s stance is clear, but the fine print on what counts as “physical” is not.
Bill van Zyll’s “Agnostic” Stance Follows Consumer Demand
Van Zyll said Nintendo has historically stayed agnostic about format, taking consumer preference heavily into account.
He noted that Switch 2 is barely a year old and supports both digital and physical, and acknowledged how much fans like physical releases.
The remarks came from a regional executive in a creator interview, not a corporate press release, so they describe Nintendo’s current position rather than a formal global commitment.
Sony’s January 2028 Disc Cutoff Sets the Contrast
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on July 1 that physical disc production for all new PlayStation games will be discontinued starting January 2028.
Sid Shuman, senior director of content communications, framed it as adapting to consumer trends.
Games released on disc before that date are unaffected. Amid ongoing shifts in PS5 Pro pricing dynamics and digital retail, the announcement has intensified this year’s physical-versus-digital debate, setting the stage for van Zyll’s comments.
Cartridges vs Game-Key Cards: Not All Switch 2 Physical Is Equal
Switch 2 physical releases come in two forms.
Traditional cartridges store the game data, while Game-Key Cards, according to TweakTown, don’t hold the full game.
Insider Gaming notes that some titles ship with a Game-Key Card in the box, an approach that hasn’t proven popular.
While recent server errors blocking Nintendo Switch 2 Game Key Card installations raised brief concerns, Nintendo’s overall stance on physical releases remains reassuring for collectors.
Reports note that games distributed by Nintendo have largely been full physical releases, but Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition will use a Game-Key Card.
Price is the other variable. GameRant reports most Nintendo-published Switch and Switch 2 games cost $10 less digitally than physically.
Insider Gaming argues that abandoning physical entirely wouldn’t make sense for Nintendo, citing Amiibo’s continued strength. That is the outlet’s view, not a Nintendo statement.
