The Gaming Brief:
- Xbox Insiders without Game Pass can now buy cloud playtime: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, or 50 hours for $11.99
- That works out to roughly 40, 32 and 24 cents per hour
- Purchased hours stream eligible games you already own and stay available until used
- Game Pass monthly cloud caps of 5, 10 and 15 hours begin in November
Xbox is putting a price tag on streaming your own library.
According to Ars Technica, starting October 21, Xbox Insiders without a Game Pass subscription can buy prepaid cloud playtime, which Microsoft says lets players stream eligible games they already own on supported devices.
The packs work out to roughly 24 to 40 cents per hour. A wider rollout is planned for November, the same month Game Pass subscribers get monthly cloud caps for the first time.
Three Prepaid Packs: $3.99, $7.99 and $11.99
Tech Insider reports three introductory packs: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99 and 50 hours for $11.99.
The per-hour rates are roughly $0.40, $0.32, and $0.24.
Microsoft describes the hours as ad-free, with shorter wait times and high-quality streaming, and reportedly says hours remain available until they’re used instead of expiring monthly.
The prices are labeled introductory, and Microsoft hasn’t said whether they hold after the November rollout.
“Games You Own” Is the Catch: Eligibility Is Still Undefined
The fine print carries a heavy catch. Players can only stream games residing in their personal digital libraries, and full catalog eligibility remains undefined.
Microsoft promised clearer regional availability and library rosters by November.
This positions the feature as an alternative to Game Pass, which, as Kotaku points out, grants Ultimate members instant access to hundreds of titles without requiring individual purchases.
Insiders are also testing a free, ad-supported tier restricted to owned titles, though session limits remain contested across reports, ranging from 30 minutes to an hour.
Kotaku points to Nvidia’s GeForce NOW as the closest comparison, noting it also requires owning your games and offers up to 100 hours of premium monthly playtime for $10 a month.
Game Pass Caps Arrive in November: 5, 10 and 15 Hours
Per The Verge, upcoming November changes will implement strict monthly caps across subscription tiers, providing 5 hours for Essential, 10 for Premium, and 15 for Ultimate, effectively concluding years of unlimited cloud streaming.
Xbox says the move reflects the rising cost of providing cloud gaming as usage grows, a trend that mirrors the pressure driving hardware prices higher. Microsoft also claims that only 4% of Game Pass subscribers stream for more than their new monthly limits.
Subscribers who run out will be able to buy additional hours through the Xbox Store.
Microsoft hasn’t said whether those extra hours will cost the same as the Insider packs. The $3.99 to $11.99 pricing is the first concrete look at what that top-up might cost.
