10 Best Pokémon Games of All Time

These best Pokémon games stand out for different reasons, such as classic turn-based battles and open-world exploration. The list includes both older favorites and newer releases, so you can find a game that suits your preferences.

    1. Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver. They let players explore the Johto region and later return to Kanto. You can catch Pokémon, challenge Gym Leaders, and battle the Elite Four.

One of their best features is that your lead Pokémon follows you around the world. These games also include the Pokéwalker accessory, which lets you take a Pokémon with you on walks.

    Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

    Why is it special?

    • Two regions to explore in one adventure.
    • Pokémon can follow you outside their Poké Balls.
    • Many Pokémon are available to catch and train.
    • Extra activities make the game enjoyable after the main story.

    2. Pokémon Emerald

Pokémon Emerald is one of the best games from the series’ early years. It takes place in the Hoenn region, where players must stop the plans of Team Magma and Team Aqua.

The game includes Pokémon from the first three generations and adds several improvements over Ruby and Sapphire. After finishing the main story, you can also visit the Battle Frontier, which offers challenging battles and extra goals.

    Pokémon Emerald

    Why is it special?

    • A large region with many places to explore.
    • Both Team Magma and Team Aqua play important roles.
    • The Battle Frontier offers extra challenges.
    • Classic turn-based battles with a strong Pokémon selection.

    3. Pokémon Platinum

Pokémon Platinum improves on Pokémon Diamond and Pearl with new story events, additional Pokémon, and gameplay changes. The adventure takes place in Sinnoh, where you investigate the plans of Team Galactic.

Giratina plays an important role in the story, and you can explore the Distortion World. The game also has several post-game activities, including the Battle Frontier, giving players more reasons to continue after becoming the Pokémon League Champion.

    Pokémon Platinum

    Why is it special?

    • A memorable story involving Giratina and Team Galactic.
    • The Distortion World offers a different kind of exploration.
    • More Pokémon are available than in the original games.
    • The Battle Frontier provides extra challenges.

    4. Pokémon Black and White

Pokémon Black and White introduced the Unova region and a new group of Pokémon. Unlike many earlier games, they focus heavily on the question of whether humans should capture Pokémon and use them for battles.

Team Plasma drives much of the story, making it one of the more story-focused entries in the series. The games also feature animated battle sprites and seasonal changes that affect parts of the world.

    Pokémon Black and White

    Why is it special?

    • A story with more focus on Pokémon and their treatment.
    • A new Pokédex during the main adventure.
    • Animated Pokémon sprites during battles.
    • Seasonal changes add variety to exploration.

    5. Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are remakes of the original Pokémon Red and Blue. They bring the Kanto region to the Game Boy Advance with improved graphics, updated menus, and extra areas to explore.

The main goal remains familiar, which is to collect Gym Badges, defeat Team Rocket, and become the Pokémon League Champion.

These games are a good choice for players who want to experience the original Pokémon adventure with some useful improvements.

    • Updated visuals and controls compared with the original games.
    • Familiar Pokémon and memorable Gym battles.
    • Extra islands provide more places to explore.

    6. Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Pokémon Legends: Arceus changes the usual Pokémon formula. Instead of starting with a Gym challenge, you explore the Hisui region and work to complete its first Pokédex.

You can catch Pokémon directly while exploring, sometimes without entering a traditional battle. Battles still matter, but exploration and catching are a larger part of the experience. The game also introduces new ways to approach wild Pokémon and adds a different style of adventure.

    • Large areas to explore and search for Pokémon.
    • Research tasks help you complete the Pokédex.
    • New forms and evolutions for familiar Pokémon.

    7. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet bring the series into the Paldea region, where you can explore a large open world. You are free to visit many areas in different orders, and the story follows three main paths.

You can challenge Gym Leaders, battle Team Star, and search for powerful Titan Pokémon. The games also introduce Terastallization, a battle feature that changes a Pokémon’s type during combat and adds new choices to battles.

    8. Pokémon Sword and Shield

Pokémon Sword and Shield take place in the Galar region, which draws inspiration from the United Kingdom.

The games focus on the usual journey of collecting Gym Badges and becoming the Champion. Gym battles take place in large stadiums that feel like big sporting events. The games also introduce Dynamax and Gigantamax, which make certain Pokémon grow bigger during battles.

The Wild Area offers open spaces where you can find and catch many Pokémon.

    9. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!

These games revisit the Kanto region with a simpler style of gameplay. You choose Pikachu or Eevee as your partner and travel through familiar towns while challenging Gym Leaders and Team Rocket.

Catching Pokémon is similar to Pokémon GO. So, you don’t need to battle wild Pokémon before catching them. The games also support local co-op in which another player can join your adventure to catch Pokémon and battle Trainers with you.

    10. New Pokémon Snap

New Pokémon Snap offers a different experience from the usual Pokémon games. Instead of catching Pokémon for battles, you travel through different environments and take pictures of the Pokémon living there. You ride along set paths and look for Pokémon behaving in their natural surroundings.

Your photos are evaluated based on factors such as the Pokémon’s pose and how well you capture the moment. It is a good choice for players who want a slower, more relaxed game.

Where Can You Play Pokémon Games Today?

The gaming platform depends on which Pokémon game you want to play. Many newer titles are available on Nintendo Switch systems, while older games may require their original consoles or a compatible alternative.

    • Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: Games such as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and New Pokémon Snap are available for the Switch family. Some titles also have Nintendo Switch 2 editions or compatibility options.
    • Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 for classic games: Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are also available on newer Nintendo systems. Availability can vary by region and storefront.
    • Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance: Games such as HeartGold and SoulSilver, Platinum, and Emerald were released for older handheld consoles. Original copies and compatible hardware may be needed to play them.

Before buying an older game, check its current availability and the platform it supports. Some classic titles are harder to find than newer releases.

    Final Thoughts

The best Pokémon game for you depends on the kind of adventure you want. HeartGold and SoulSilver offer a classic journey with plenty to explore, while Emerald and Platinum are great choices for traditional battles.

If you prefer a different style, Legends: Arceus offers more freedom when catching Pokémon, and New Pokémon Snap focuses on photography. Start with a game that matches your interests, then try other entries if you want more adventures.
