The Gaming Brief
- Sony emailed long-inactive PS5 owners offering up to $400, with Back Market handling the sale.
- The top payout needs a PS5 Standard in Grade 0 condition with two or more controllers.
- New consoles cost $599.99 (Digital) and $649.99 (disc) after the latest price rises.
- Circana’s Mat Piscatella has seen no evidence yet of a GTA 6 hardware boost.
Sony is contacting PlayStation 5 owners who have gone quiet on their consoles and inviting them to cash out for up to $400, according to an email from Sony shared by a user on ResetEra.
The offer arrives ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI’s November 19 console release. The headline figure is real, but it comes with conditions like who qualifies and how the number compares with other options.
Who Pays the $400, and On What Terms?
Sony isn’t buying consoles itself. The email, titled “Trade in your PS5 and get up to $400,” sends users to Back Market, the refurbished-electronics marketplace Sony partnered with in 2024.

Owners check an estimated value, accept the terms, and receive payment by bank transfer.
The $400 estimate applies to a “PS5 Standard console with two or more controllers in Grade 0 condition.” Disc-drive presence, condition, and bundled accessories change the payout.
Sony hasn’t explained the strategy itself, but Microsoft recently ran a similar push for Xbox Series X and S owners through Best Buy.
The Math Against eBay and GameStop
The two-controller requirement is the catch for households with a single DualSense.
According to Notebookcheck, a disc-model PS5 with one controller in decent condition sells for $450 to $500 on eBay. After deducting fees and shipping, the take-home is not much above $400.
Separately, GameStop offers up to $275 in store credit on some models, the report says.
So Back Market’s pitch is certainty and cash, not the highest possible price.
For owners who would rather skip listings, shipping and haggling, that trade-off may be worth it. Those with a spare controller and patience may still do slightly better selling privately.
Why GTA 6 Timing Matters?
The second-hand market matters more because new hardware is costly.
The Digital Edition now costs $599.99 and the disc version $649.99. The PS5 Pro, with an $899.99 MSRP, has been hit hardest by component shortages and often sells at auction for hundreds more. Sony’s base models remain relatively well stocked.
GTA 6 was expected to lift hardware revenue, but that prediction hasn’t materialized so far.
Rockstar’s pre-order pace has been strong, which points to a large existing install base. Buyers without a PlayStation or Xbox could still remain priced out.
Notebookcheck notes that Sony has said it hopes to capitalize on existing users. Cheaper pre-owned units could also bring newcomers into the ecosystem and into PS Plus subscriptions.
For owners with an idle PS5, the offer is a real option with strict conditions. For anyone waiting to buy one for GTA 6, it could widen the supply of used consoles.
