    The Gaming Brief:

    • Bloomberg corroborated code references to two Apple-designed game controllers, model numbers T6502 and T1057
    • Code found in a macOS 26.7 release candidate shows dual thumbsticks, shoulder buttons, D-pad, and haptic motor components
    • Development has reportedly been underway for more than a year, per Gurman
    • Product engineering and conception are being led by Beats executives, suggesting Beats branding over Apple’s own

Apple is reportedly building its own game controllers for iPhone, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who corroborated code references first spotted by a MacRumors reader in a macOS 26.7 release candidate. The two devices, labeled T6502 and T1057, feature dual thumbsticks, shoulder buttons, a D pad, and haptic motors.

Gurman reports that Beats executives are overseeing the project, suggesting the controllers may launch under the Beats name, a strategy that could align with Apple’s push into affordable hardware.

Beats Branding Would Mark a Pricing Strategy Shift From Apple’s Backbone Partnership

Apple currently sells third-party controllers like Backbone One and SteelSeries Nimbus+ through its own store, alongside native Bluetooth support for Sony’s DualSense and Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Controller.

Routing its in-house design through Beats follows a familiar pattern: Beats products typically use less premium materials to hit lower price points, letting Apple test a mass-market controller without diluting its flagship hardware image.

T6502 and T1057 Codenames Suggest Two Distinct Form Factors

The existence of two separate model identifiers hints that Apple may be developing more than one controller design simultaneously.

This could potentially target different use cases: a compact clip-on style similar to Backbone’s phone-mounted design, that turns the mobile into a portable console versus a standalone gamepad for use with Apple TV 4K.

Neither the code references nor Gurman’s reporting specify exact dimensions or connectivity methods, and no release timeline has been disclosed.

Apple’s MFi Ecosystem Already Supports Third-Party Hardware

Existing MFi-certified and Bluetooth controllers already work across iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, meaning Apple’s direct entry into the hardware market creates competition with current retail partners like Backbone and SteelSeries.

That could create concerns for existing partners, as third party controllers rely on the same software and driver systems to connect properly with Apple’s operating systems.

Whether Apple positions its Beats controller as a budget alternative or a premium companion to Apple TV 4K’s growing AAA catalog remains unconfirmed.
