Captain Silver is a classic side-scrolling action game that sends players on a dangerous search for a pirate’s lost treasure. Originally released in arcades in 1987, it later arrived on the Sega Master System and Nintendo Famicom.

For me, its mix of sword fighting, treasure hunting, and strange enemies is interesting for a game from this era.

However, its challenging stages and simple controls may take some getting used to, especially for players familiar with modern platformers. In this article, I will review its gameplay, story, graphics, sound, and available platforms in detail.

    Captain Silver Game Overview

Captain Silver is a 2D action platformer with hack-and-slash combat. Players control a young sailor who fights enemies with a sword while moving through different stages.

    • Developer: Jorudan
    • Arcade publisher: Data East
    • Genre: Action platformer, hack and slash
    • Original release: 1987
    • Main platforms: Arcade, Sega Master System, Nintendo Famicom
    • Game modes: Primarily single-player, with arcade versions also documented as supporting multiplayer

The game combines platforming with combat rather than focusing on puzzles or complicated story missions. You move through dangerous locations, defeat enemies, collect items, and work toward finding Captain Silver’s treasure.

    Captain Silver Release Date

Captain Silver first appeared in arcades in 1987. It received home versions for the Sega Master System and Nintendo Famicom the following year.

Here are the main release dates:

    • Arcade: June 1987 in Japan and July 1987 in North America.
    • Sega Master System: July 1988 in Japan, with regional releases following in Europe and North America.
    • Nintendo Famicom: December 16, 1988, in Japan.

The Master System version reached North America in September 1989. Release dates varied by region, so the game did not arrive on every platform at the same time.

    A Detailed Captain Silver Review

Now that I have covered a brief overview of Captain Silver, I’ll review this game now in detail:

    Story and Setting

    • My Rating: 6/10

The story follows a young sailor named Jim Aykroyd, known as Jack Avery in the North American version. He sets out to find the lost treasure of Captain Silver, facing dangerous enemies along the way.

The adventure takes you through locations such as a town, a pirate ship, an island, and a mountain. You also encounter fantasy enemies that make the journey feel different from a typical pirate adventure.

The story is simple and mainly gives you a reason to keep moving through the stages. There is little character development or dialogue, which is understandable for a game released in the 1980s.

Players who want a detailed story may find it lacking, but the treasure-hunting theme works well for this type of game.

    Gameplay and Features

    • My Rating: 6.5/10

The gameplay combines side-scrolling platforming with sword combat. You control Jim as he walks, jumps, ducks, and attacks enemies.

Each stage features different obstacles, enemies, and items to collect. Like Shinobi Legions, which is one of the best Sega Saturn games, Captain Silver focuses on side-scrolling action and melee combat, although the two games have different settings and visual styles.

Here are some of the main gameplay features:

    • Sword Combat: Use your sword to defeat pirates, skeletons, and other enemies.
    • Magic Attacks: Collect certain items to gain projectile attacks and improve your offensive abilities.
    • Power-Ups: Find items that improve your attacks or provide temporary benefits.
    • Boss Battles: Face stronger enemies as you progress through the adventure.
    • Stage Progression: Complete each area while dealing with enemies, obstacles, and time limits.

The combat is easy to learn, but the game can be challenging. Enemies often attack quickly, and Jim’s slow movement can make some platforming sections frustrating. The Master System version also differs from the arcade release.

The Japanese and European versions include more stages than the North American version. Overall, the gameplay offers enough variety to keep retro fans interested, but its difficulty and dated controls may frustrate players who are used to modern platformers.

    Graphics and Sound

    • My Rating: 6.5/10

Captain Silver uses colorful pixel art to bring its locations and enemies to life. The environments include towns, ships, islands, and other fantasy-themed areas. Enemy designs also add variety, with pirates and supernatural creatures appearing throughout the adventure.

The visuals are suitable for a game from 1987, although the backgrounds and character animations are limited by the hardware. Players should not expect detailed environments or complex visual effects.

The sound is similarly simple. The music and sound effects support the action, but they do not stand out as major highlights. The Sega Master System versions also support Sega’s FM sound module, which can provide a different sound experience on compatible hardware.

The graphics and sound do their job, but neither is a particularly strong reason to play the game today. Its colorful presentation may still appeal to fans of 8-bit games.

On Which Platform Can You Play Captain Silver?

Captain Silver was released for three main platforms:

    • Arcade machines
    • Sega Master System
    • Nintendo Famicom

    Each version has some differences.

    Arcade

This is the original version from 1987. It offers the classic arcade experience, with sword combat, platforming, and challenging stages. Playing it today generally requires access to original arcade hardware or a compatible arcade emulator.

    Sega Master System

This version is a good choice for players interested in Sega’s 8-bit console. It retains the main gameplay while making changes to items and other features. The Japanese and European releases include more stages than the North American version.

    Nintendo Famicom

Released in Japan in December 1988, this version changes several gameplay systems. It includes a health gauge, item shops, and different stages and bosses. It was a Japanese Famicom release, not an official North American NES release.

Can You Play Captain Silver on Modern Platforms?

There is no widely available official modern release of Captain Silver on current consoles or PC storefronts. You can play it on original hardware or use compatible emulation on gaming PCs, depending on the version and your setup.

If you use emulation, make sure you follow applicable laws and the emulator’s requirements. Availability can vary by region, and the game is not widely included in modern Sega collections.

What I Liked and Disliked About Captain Silver

Captain Silver has some enjoyable features, but a few issues can make the game frustrating.

    What I liked

    • The controls are simple and easy to learn.
    • Different environments keep the stages from feeling too similar.
    • Power-ups and magic attacks add variety to combat.
    • The pixel art and arcade-style gameplay offer a classic retro experience.

    What I disliked

    • The high difficulty can make progress frustrating.
    • The story lacks depth and character development.
    • Slow movement can make some platforming sections difficult.
    • Some regional versions have fewer stages than others.

    Captain Silver Final Rating

My overall rating for Captain Silver is 6.3/10. It offers simple sword combat, colorful environments, and a classic treasure-hunting adventure. However, its difficulty, limited story, and dated movement hold it back.

Captain Silver is worth trying for fans of retro arcade games and Sega Master System titles. However, players who prefer smoother controls and deeper stories may enjoy other classic games more.
