How to Play Among Us: Is It Free & Safe for Kids?

I still remember the first time I got voted out in Among Us for something I didn’t even do. I was standing next to a dead body, doing absolutely nothing wrong, and the entire lobby turned on me in about four seconds.

That’s the moment I got hooked. I’ve played Among Us almost every day since then, sometimes with friends, sometimes with random lobbies at 1 AM when I should probably be asleep, and I’ve picked up a lot of small lessons the hard way.

This guide is everything I wish someone had told me before my first game.

What Is Among Us?

Among Us is a multiplayer social deduction game created by InnerSloth where Crewmates complete tasks while one or more imposters secretly eliminate players without getting caught. The real challenge is figuring out who to trust, which is what makes every round so tense and entertaining.

Each round involves completing tasks, finding bodies, calling emergency meetings, and voting on who players think is the Imposter. Guess correctly, and the Crewmates get closer to winning, but vote out the wrong player and the Imposter stays hidden.

What are Imposters in Among Us?

The Imposter must blend in with the Crewmates while secretly eliminating them. Imposters can sabotage lights, close doors, use vents, fake tasks, build alibis, and create doubt during meetings.

Key imposter abilities:

  • Blend in with the Crewmates.
  • Sabotage lights to create confusion.
  • Close doors to isolate players.
  • Use vents to move quickly and escape.
  • Fake tasks to avoid suspicion.
  • Build alibis before meetings.
  • Stay calm during discussions.
  • Let other players accuse each other instead of becoming defensive.

What are Crewmates in Among Us?

Crewmates are the players who complete tasks and try to identify and vote out the Imposters. They must complete all assigned tasks or eliminate every Imposter to win the game.

Key Crewmate objectives:

  • Complete assigned tasks.
  • Watch player behavior.
  • Track where other players were.
  • Look for suspicious activity.
  • Vote out the Imposters.

When Did Among Us Come Out?

Among Us was released in 2018 but gained little attention at launch. The game became a global hit in 2020 around COVID-19 after Twitch streamers and YouTubers started playing it, turning it into one of the most popular games almost overnight.

I started playing Among Us around that time and have continued playing it ever since. It’s a rare example of a game becoming massively popular years after its original release.

Is Among Us Safe for Kids?

Among Us itself has no blood or graphic violence, and player eliminations are shown through simple, non-graphic animations. The game itself is generally safe for kids from a content perspective.

The main concern is public chat, where children may encounter strangers using inappropriate language or attempting unwanted conversations. Private lobbies with friends or family are the safer option for younger players.

My honest recommendation as someone who plays regularly: private lobbies with friends or family are the safest option. Public lobbies need supervision, or at minimum, a private lobby setup for younger kids. Innersloth does allow chat filtering and reporting tools, but no filter catches everything.

Is Among Us Free?

Among Us is free to play on iOS and Android, but it’s a paid game on PC through Steam and consoles, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. The PC and console versions are usually inexpensive and frequently go on sale.

There are several PC emulators that allow you to play the game for free, but I don’t recommend them, as they can cause malware and viruses in your PC. If you’re looking for more free games to play on your Mobile, you can also check out our guide to the best free games.

How to Play Among Us?

Getting started with Among Us takes about two minutes once you know what you’re doing. Open the game, either create a new lobby or join an existing one with a code, and wait for enough players to fill the lobby.

Once the host starts the match, you’ll be assigned your role privately, either Crewmate or Imposter, and the round begins.

The controls are simple: move around with touch controls on mobile or WASD on PC, interact with tasks or vents by walking up to them, and use the emergency meeting button or report button when something happens. Everything else comes down to reading people and thinking on your feet.

How to Make a Lobby in Among Us?

  • Select Host from the main menu.
  • Choose Online or Local.
  • Select your preferred map.
  • Adjust the player count.
  • Choose the number of Imposters.
  • Set the task difficulty and kill cooldown.

Share the generated lobby code with your friends. Your friends can join directly without entering public games.

How to Win as an Imposter in Among Us?

Winning as an Imposter requires patience, deception, and careful timing. Avoid rushing kills, fake tasks convincingly, and stay calm during meetings.

Tips for winning as an Imposter:

  • Don’t kill the first player you see.
  • Fake tasks by standing near task stations.
  • Use vents to escape and create distance after a kill.
  • Avoid running directly away from a reported body.
  • Stay quiet during meetings at first.
  • Let other players accuse each other before sharing your theory.

How to Win as Crewmate in Among Us?

Winning as Crewmate means completing tasks while paying attention to player behavior. Stay near others when possible, verify claims about tasks and locations, and report bodies immediately.

Tips for winning as Crewmate:

  • Travel in pairs or small groups.
  • Stay near other players to make kills harder for Imposters.
  • Pay attention to who was with whom.
  • Cross-check players’ claims about tasks and locations.
  • Report bodies as soon as you find them.
  • Don’t wait, as the Imposter may use the extra time to create an alibi.

How to Turn Off Quick Chat in Among Us?

  • Click Play
  • Select Online Mode
  • Select Find Game
  • Tap Filters Options (Right Side of The Screen)
  • Go To Chat Menu
  • Change Quick Chat to Free Chat.

Keep in mind that Free Chat allows open text messages. For younger players, leaving Quick Chat enabled is the safer option.

How to Get All Items in Among Us?

Cosmetic items like hats, skins, pets, and visors are unlocked either through free rotating challenges, in-game currency earned by playing, or through purchasing bundles in the shop.

Some cosmetics are tied to limited-time events, so they’re only available for a short window before they rotate out. There’s no cheat code or shortcut to unlock everything instantly, it’s either play consistently or purchase the bundles directly.

Funny Among Us Names

Funny names can make Among Us lobbies more entertaining, even though they won’t help you win. Here are some fun options you can use:

  • Not The Imposter
  • Definitely Sus
  • Ghost (Dead Chat)
  • Vent Enjoyer
  • Task Simulator
  • Emergency Meeting Guy

Is Among Us Cross-Platform?

Yes, Among Us supports cross-platform play on PC, mobile, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. Players can join the same game using the same lobby code, regardless of which platform they use.

Can You Play Among Us on Mac?

Yes, Among Us is available on Mac through Steam. The system requirements are light since it’s not a graphically demanding game, so most Macs from the last several years can run it without any issues.

How To Download Among Us?

You can download Among Us through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for free on mobile, through Steam for PC and Mac, or through the respective console stores for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox

Note: Always download from these official sources rather than third-party sites, since unofficial download links are a common way malware gets distributed disguised as game installers.

Is Among Us Worth Playing?

Among Us is still one of the easiest games to pick up with friends, whether you’re playing on a phone during a break or hosting a full lobby on PC at night like I do. It’s free on mobile, cheap everywhere else, cross-platform, and generally safe content-wise. The chat is really the only thing parents need to manage carefully with kids.

If you’re on the fence, just start with a private lobby, get a feel for one round as Crewmate and one as Imposter, and you’ll understand the appeal almost immediately.

Among Us FAQs: Free, Safe, and Gameplay Questions

Is Among Us okay for my child?

The game content itself is fine, there’s no blood or graphic violence. The main thing to manage is chat exposure in public lobbies, so private lobbies or supervised play are the safer choice for younger kids.

Can I play Among Us in the browser?

Among Us doesn’t have an official browser version. It needs to be downloaded through mobile app stores, Steam, or console stores.

Is Among Us 13+?

Among Us carries a rating around age 9 and up on most platforms, but because of open chat with strangers in public lobbies, many parents choose to treat it more cautiously, closer to a young teen recommendation for unsupervised public play.

What does sus mean in Among Us?

“Sus” is short for suspicious. Players say it when someone’s behavior, like skipping a task or being alone near a body, makes them look like the Imposter.

Is Among Us good or bad?

As someone who’s played it almost daily, it’s a genuinely fun, low-cost social game that’s great with friends. It’s not for everyone if you dislike accusation-based games, but for group play it holds up well years after release.
