Game franchises like God of War can grow over many years, with multiple games released as the series continues. God of War has built a large collection of games since the first title came out in 2005.

    1. God of War (2005)

    • Release Date: March 22, 2005

God of War is the first game in the series and introduces Kratos, a Spartan warrior serving the Greek gods. In this game, Kratos must defeat Ares, the God of War, after being manipulated into killing his own family.

You fight enemies, solve puzzles, and explore locations inspired by Greek mythology. The game also introduced the Blades of Chaos, which became Kratos’ signature weapons.

    What’s special about it?

    • Fast-paced combat with the Blades of Chaos.
    • A dark story based on Greek mythology.
    • Large enemies and memorable boss battles.

    2. God of War II (2007)

With help from Gaia and the Titans, Kratos sets out to change his fate and take revenge on Zeus. The game adds new weapons, powers, enemies, and larger areas to explore. A great thing about this game is that you don’t need a powerful system to play it. You can even play it on a budget gaming PC and still get good performance and smooth gameplay.

    What’s special about it?

    • Bigger battles and areas than the first game.
    • More weapons, powers, and abilities to use.
    • A strong revenge story involving Zeus and the Titans.

God of War: Betrayal is a mobile game that takes place between God of War and God of War II. Kratos is blamed for the murder of Zeus’ messenger and must find the real culprit.

    What’s special about it?

    • A 2D take on the familiar God of War formula.
    • Classic enemies and combat from the console games.

God of War III cover image

God of War III is the first game I played in the series, and it quickly became one of my favorites. In this game, Kratos continues his battle against the Greek gods and Titans as he climbs Mount Olympus.

I really enjoyed the huge battles, powerful weapons, and intense boss fights. It also brings the main Greek storyline to its conclusion, making it an important game in the series. This is not a very demanding title. Even if you have a gaming laptop with average specifications, you can still enjoy this game without any major performance issues.

    What’s special about it?

    • Huge battles against powerful Greek gods.
    • Brutal combat with several different weapons.
    • Impressive boss fights and large-scale action.

    6. God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010)

God of War Ghost of Sparta cover image

God of War: Ghost of Sparta explores Kratos’ past and his relationship with his brother, Deimos. Kratos travels through several locations while searching for Deimos and facing enemies from Greek mythology.

The game keeps the combat style of the main series while adding new weapons and abilities. It also fills in some important parts of Kratos’ backstory.

    What’s special about it?

    • Gives players more of Kratos’ backstory.
    • Explores his relationship with his brother Deimos.
    • Brings the familiar combat style to the PSP.

    7. God of War: Ascension (2013)

God of War: Ascension is set before the other Greek-era games. Kratos has broken his blood oath to Ares and is being hunted by the Furies.

You fight through different areas while solving puzzles and battling creatures from Greek mythology. Ascension also introduced multiplayer to the series, allowing players to fight against others in different online modes.

    • Shows Kratos’ story before the original game.
    • Introduces new enemies and combat abilities.
    • Adds multiplayer to the God of War series.

    8. God of War (2018)

    • Game Type: Mainline game
God of War 2018 cover image

God of War 2018 takes Kratos to the world of Norse mythology many years after the events of the Greek games.

He now lives with his son, Atreus, and the two travel to fulfill the final wish of Atreus’ mother. The game changes the combat and camera style used in earlier titles. It also introduces new weapons, characters, and a different side of Kratos.

Before you get too excited about playing it on PC, know that this is a demanding game and you’re going to need a pretty decent CPU to play it. If you’re not sure which CPU is right for your gaming PC, you can check my guide on the best CPU for gaming PCs to find a suitable option.

    What’s special about it?

    • Norse mythology gives the game a fresh setting.
    • Kratos and Atreus share a deeper father-son story.
    • The new camera and combat system changed how the game feels.

    9. God of War Ragnarök (2022)

    • Release Date: November 9, 2022
    • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC
    • Story Timeline: Norse saga
    • Game Type: Mainline game
God of War Ragnarok cover image

God of War Ragnarök continues the story of Kratos and Atreus after the events of the 2018 game. Fimbulwinter has arrived, and the two must prepare for Ragnarök while dealing with several Norse gods.

You can explore all nine realms, fight new enemies, and use familiar weapons alongside new abilities. The game also expands the story of Atreus and his connection to Norse mythology.

    What’s special about it?

    • Continues the story of Kratos and Atreus.
    • Lets players explore all nine Norse realms.
    • Adds new enemies, weapons, and abilities.

    10. God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla (2023)

    • Story Timeline: Norse saga

God of War Ragnarok Valhalla cover image

God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla continues Kratos’ story after the events of Ragnarök. Kratos travels to Valhalla with Mimir and faces challenges connected to his past.

The combat is based on Ragnarök but adds roguelite elements, so each attempt can play out differently. I also like that it gives us more time with Kratos after the main story instead of simply ending his Norse journey.

    What’s special about it?

    • Continues Kratos’ story after Ragnarök.
    • Adds roguelite gameplay to the combat.
    • Gives players more insight into Kratos’ past.

    11. God of War Sons of Sparta (2026)

    • Release Date: February 12, 2026
    • Platforms: PlayStation 5
    • Story Timeline: Greek saga
    • Game Type: Prequel
God of War sons of sparta cover image

God of War: Sons of Sparta goes further back in Kratos’ story than any previous game. It follows a young Kratos and his brother Deimos as they train to become Spartan warriors. Unlike the main 3D games, Sons of Sparta is a 2D action platformer.

Just like many people are wondering when GTA 6 will come to PC, the same question is being asked about Sons of Sparta. However, there is currently no confirmed PC release date.

It gives players a look at Kratos’ childhood and his early relationship with Deimos before the events of the other games.

    What’s special about it?

    • Shows Kratos and Deimos during their childhood.
    • Uses a 2D action platformer style.
    • Gives players a new look at Kratos’ early life.
